Clocktower Lofts

The Clocktower at 461 2nd Street is one of San Francisco’s best-loved loft conversions. The building started life in 1907 as the Schmidt Lithograph Company, and its clock tower has been part of the South Beach skyline ever since. In the early 1990s it was transformed into 127 live/work lofts, and the conversion won design awards from the American Institute of Architects and the American Society of Interior Designers.

Living Here

No two lofts here are quite the same. Many have exposed brick, heavy timber beams, concrete “mushroom” columns and big steel-and-glass windows, and the top-floor lofts often have soaring peaked ceilings. Around the lofts are landscaped interior courtyards and a roof deck, plus elevators and garage parking. The live/work zoning makes it a natural fit for anyone who works from home.

The location is hard to beat: Oracle Park, the Embarcadero waterfront, South Park and the restaurants of South Beach and SoMa are all a short walk away, and the Bay Bridge is right next door.
